The 10% Method. How To Work Out A Percentage Of An Amount Without A Calculator.

To work out 10% of a number divide the number by 10. And to work out 5% of a number divide the 10% amount by 2.

So in example 3, you are asked to work out 30% of £520. Begin by finding 10% of £520 which is £52. Now since you are working out 30% you need 3 of these 10% amounts so 52 + 52 + 52 = £106.

In the last example, you need 35% of £3600. 10% of £3600 is £360 and os 5% is £180. So to get 35% you need three 10 percents and one 5% which gives 360 + 360 + 360 + 180 = £1260.

This is probably the easiest method to use on non-calculator maths paper. On a calculator paper you might prefer an easier method.
